You've probably all seen them, some of you might have even made them in Photoshop: a personalized Halo 3 spartan (example.)

I will show you how to make one in the GIMP.

First, you will need this. it is a closeup of the Halo 3 Spartan's helmet.

Now, open that image in the GIMP.

you will need to cut out the chief from the picture, there are three ways to do this, I will list them here, along with the relative difficulty of that method:

  1. Manual Free Select
    - This is the hardest, to do it this way you will need to select the button that looks like this , and draw a line around the spartan, this is not the most effective way of doing it.
  2. Select Shapes
    - This is easier, and more accurate, but still not the most effective, this tool attempts to detect the edges of the image, to select the spartan, click the Select Shapes button, which looks like this , click each corner, or extremity, and the tool will try to conform to the curves of the image, this is not very effective becuase sometimes it can't tell where the edge is.
  3. Create Path
    - By far the easiest and most accurate way of doing it, select the Create Path button, , and click at each corner on the spartan, draw completely around him, at the last point though, don't click the first node, click next to it, then drag the last one onto the first one, if you click the first one, it will think you want to move it.

You should look like this:

to turn this into a selection, in the main GIMP window, click the button below the control buttons, that says "create selection from path" to turn your path into a selection, then click the rectangle select button to get rid of your path so all you have is the selection.

this is what you should look like now:

once you have your spartan selected, right-click the selection, and copy it, then right-click again, and paste it back, this will float it over the original image making it so that annoying white lines don't show up at the edges of your spartan, after you have pasted that, click Layer > New Layer, to create a layer out of your spartan.

We are halfway there, now you need to cut out the visor, do this in whatever manner was easiest for you, once you have it selected, repeat the process that you did on the spartan, turn it into a selection, copy it, then paste it back, click Layer > New Layer.

There, now type ctrl+l to open up the layers dialogue, and make sure your layers are in this order (there will be a preview of the image next to the layer name):

Top - visor (double click the name to rename it thusly)
Middle - cut-out spartan (again, you should rename it)
Bottom - Background, it should already be named this, and it doesn't matter what this is named, this is the original, uncut image.

Like this:

Make sure that your layers are in that order.

Before we get to coloring it, make sure you save your template by clicking File > Save As... and naming it something like Halo3People.psd, so that your layers are preserved.

Now, click the Primary Armor layer, so that it is selected.

Now for the easy part, with the spartan layer selected, click Filters > Colors > Filter Pack...

In the window that pops up, there will be a preview of your image, along with an original version, click "Hue" and you will see another window open, there will be various colors in this window, to color your spartan simply click one of the colors, you will see a preview of the current image in the middle, and a preview of what it will look like if you click one of the buttons, on the given button. To create a color that is not there, just mix and match until you get it right, if you mess up and want to start over with coloring, close the Hue window, and click the "Reset" button in the bottom of the Filter Pack window, then restart.

When you are satisfied, you can click ok, and it will color your spartan.

when you are done manipulating the colors, click File > Save As... and save it as a high quality jpg, or a png, for small size and excellent quality.

If you forgot to save your template, no matter, you can download one from right here.
